The Task

To design a portable fence that can with stand a harsh farming environment. As well as eliminate they risk of injuries caused by colliding with "invisible" temporary fences.

Why are 18,700 NZ farmers a year injured on the job?

In 2012 ACC reports there were four fatalities and 67 serious harm injuries due to farm workers colliding with temporary race fences. Work Safe New Zealand estimate the industry grossly under reports work place injury by up to 80%.

Temporary race tapes are in effect short sections of electric fence tape with the same plastic handle. The tape quickly gets dirty making it an almost invisible in bad weather and at night.

The inspiration for CEEMEE was provided to a local Waikato dairy farmer when he rode into three different temporary fences on the same day. The following week three more farm workers suffered a similar fate. Neil spent the next few weeks locked in his shed building a prototype from used drench bottles, rubber, wire and rivets before contacting us to commercialise the concept.

We began by investigating material selection. The fence must survive extreme distortion then return to its compact state. It had to with stand UV, frost, ice, be strong enough to contain animals, be bright and reflect light, be 100% recyclable and have a life span in that exceeds eight years. We are extremely proud of the end result. CEEMEE has surpassed all these constraints and more. CEEMEE has been tested in the field for the last eight months without incident.
